Wow. Today's ride was killer, right from the start! A two mile climb that was 16% in some places. That's steep! Then a long decent and a few hills on our way to Bandon. Check out the details here: Day 2
The whole reason I am on this ride is because of a man named Mark Bosworth. Mark was a volunteer on Cycle Oregon in 2011 and went missing during the ride and he is still missing. His family set up a scholarship in his name to sponsor first time riders on Cycle Oregon. My wife and I were lucky enough to receive the scholarship last fall. I had such an amazing time last year that I am back again this fall. If you are interested in learning more about the scholarship or would like to donate to the fund, please check out www.markbosworthfund.org Here is a link to the details for today's ride: Day 1 A great first day of the ride. There were a few hills, but overall, a pretty nice day on the bike! I wanted to post last night, but had no reception in the small valley we were staying in.
What an awesome first week! These 5th graders really know what they are doing. We have been building our learning community with different activities throughout the week, with a focus on collaboration. Yesterday we did a "Tarp Flip" activity that challenged our abilities to collaborate and communicate in small(ish) groups. We also had a load of fun decorating my luggage bag for my Cycle Oregon adventure next week. Here are some pictures... We also worked on a challenging problem today in math called "Bucky the Badger." This was a tough problem that got students thinking about lots of different problem solving strategies. Some students were close to getting the answer, but I don't think anyone left today with the solution. I asked them to tell you all about it and show you their work in their math journal. If they want to keep working on it (and you're welcome to try it yourself, too!), they can check their answers on Monday. I posted an image below that is necessary for solving the problem. We ended the day today by brainstorming what it would take to have the best class ever this year - from students, teachers, AND parents. I was very impressed with their responses. Here's what they came up with: I leave for my cycling adventure tomorrow morning, so be sure to check the blog often, as I will be posting updates whenever I can.
Specials next week: Library/Tech, Music/PE, Art/Spanish, Music/PE, Art/Spanish Reminders:
