So, last night we found out there is a 18,000 acre fire in Halfway, the town we were supposed to stay in tonight. Because of that, we are back in Cambridge tonight after an 80 mile option ride into Hells Canyon.
We set a record last night for daily rainfall during a Cycle Oregon! It started pouring after my last post and didn't stop until early this morning. Temps were chilly this morning and it was hard to crawl out of a warm sleeping bag, but I'm sure glad we did. After a gradual 15 mile climb, we descended 2,000 feet into into Hells Canyon. While the descent was grin-inducing, this was an out-and-back ride, so everything we go down, we must come up! After riding many miles through the breathtaking canyon, we reached Oxbow dam and turned around for the ride back.
Ever since we descended the big hill into the canyon, I was dreading the climb back up, but I found the perfect gear and it turned into the highlight of the day.
Here is the GPS of the ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/900147447
Tomorrow we are headed back to Farewell Bend. More rain in the forecast, but hey! We're Oregonians!
