Mr. Basham was dressed up like a pancake king today, thanks to his wonderful class that raised over $1000 to help pay for our trip to Mazamas Mountain Science School! Hope to see you at the pancake breakfast tomorrow...
Ms. Crannell's class challenged us to a dance-off. Mr. Whitehead was the judge. Here are some pictures:
Last week week we looked at writing piece and some pictures we decided as a class if we thought it was convincing or not convincing.
The next day we all got roles for a project that we were going to do the next day. We also learned about twin peaks, which was what we are going to talk about the next day.
The next day we actually did the debate, we got split up in 4 different groups and had debates. Then we tried to come to a consensus, but then we had to stop. The next day we got in a group of 2 and looked at books about native americans.

🎅Fun Winter Story🎅
“Hey!!!” Santa yells from outside (and he can hear everything)
A few hours later, poof!!! “Who are you?” Holly says glumly. “I’m the magical christmas fairy” she says “I can make dreams come true!” She raises her arms up in the air in excitement. “What do you wish for?” She wonders aloud
“I want to become an angel” Holly says “but you probably think that's silly”
“No, of course not” she says. She waved her arm through the air “good luck” she says and disappeared. And at that very moment Holly burst into a shimmering sparkle and when the sparkling stopped she was wearing a white dress that reached her toes, a pair of white wings, and a sparkly halo. She had on golden sandals with silver diamonds and she flew up into the sky out of Santa’s workshop. And nobody, not even Santa knew were Holly the angel elf went.

🎅Fun Winter Story🎅
There once was a elf that wanted to be a angel, and every elf laughed at her! Even Santa thought it was silly. This elf's name was Holly. She had curly brown hair, and deep greenish-blueish eyes. She was very short and had pointy ears. Her glasses were purple and black, and she had to push them up every 5 seconds. But she couldn’t worry about becoming an angel today because it was christmas eve. She had to help Santa load up his sleigh.
“Ho, Ho, Ho ”said Santa when Holly walked in the room.
“If it isn’t Holly the angel elf!” he said
“Hi Santa, I came to help you, but if you don’t need any thats fine.” Holly said as she slowly walked out of the room.
“Wait!” Santa yelled at her
“Fine I will stay”
Holly spent the rest of her day helping Santa load his slay. After Holly helped Santa she went to bed and didn’t wake up till Cchristmas morning.
It was Christmas morning and Holly watched all of the kids wake up on the big Christmas map. It was meant for seeing if kids were naughty or nice, but she always liked to see the kids happy faces when they saw there joy filled stockings and presents under the tree. She was watching one girl and boy that were twins named Jilly and Billy. Jilly opened up a barbie doll and screamed for joy, and Billy opened up a brand new train set. All that she wanted was to be an angel “I don’t want this stupid job anymore” she muttered “Santa’s so bossy”
“Hey!!!” Santa yells from outside… to be continued!
Here are a few pictures of some decimal and expanded notation that we've been working on in class, just in case students need to reference them...

This week we did some more awesome stuff,on the first day we worked on a What Is Technology packet. The packet had us think of what was techology and what wasn't,then on the next page we had to identify what was engineering and what wasn't.On the next day we worked on another packet.Mr.Basham was reading a book called Saving Salila’s Turtle,we had find words in the book and identify them.We also worked on types of pollution that we found in the book.THe next day we worked on the packet more and finished the book.
Today in writing, we worked on our informational pieces for our inquiry unit ‘Sharing the Planet’.
“For many years, global warming has been melting ice and causing animals to move to different places than before, one of the causes for global warming is caused by greenhouse gases, greenhouse gases is made by burning wood and gasoline, it is causing global warming because in the article, “Scorekeeper for climate.” A scientist called Thomas Bryan said.” Greenhouse gases get heat trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere.”
Which is global warming is making the Earth change, is because of the heat getting trapped into the Earth’s atmosphere.Greenhouse gases is a common cause for global warming. “
That was an example of one of our students writing piece.
Today is the last day to edit and revise our body paragraphs until Mr. Basham grades it.

Working Smarter, Not Harder
L: Hi, Mr Basham!
MB: Hi Lana!
L: So, to you, what is the meaning of working smarter, not harder?
MB: Working smarter not harder is about finding shortcuts that save time.
L: how can this apply to the classroom?
MB: Well, lets say I asked you to get all the colored pencils in the room. Instead of getting all the colored pencils individually, you might pick up their buckets and get 2-3 at a time.
L: Thank you for our time!
MB: You’re welcome!
Working Smarter, Not Harder
L: Hi, ------- so I'm going to interview you about the work smarter not harder thing
L: My question for you is what do you think work smarter not harder means to you
----: I think it means that you are trying to figure out ways to kind of be more clever and not trying to do extra things
L: And how do you think that's important in math
----: I think that it makes math easier
L: Thank you for your time, ----.

Music and P.E. 11/29/17
Today in music we got prepared for the holiday sing along. To do this we sang a bunch of songs like, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Feliz Navidad, and Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel.
Today in P.E. we started by playing flag tag which we put a jersey in our pocket sticking out and you had to try to grab other people's jerseys. Then, we played bowling bocce, which was we put a bowling pin on the closest line to you and in your group of three you tried to knock the pin over with three different types of objects. When you knocked the pin over then you put it on the next line and you keep going until you reach the last line then you win.
Technology (Coding) 11/30/17
Today we had an hour at technology! And it was for coding!!! We went to this webset called Scratch, it’s were you can make an animation. We used this website called scratch. And we had to make animations. An animation is where one person does a a few different motions
This marks the first press release of the newly formed Bashlantina Press Corps. These wonderful writers have been working hard in their free time to keep to up-to-date on important happenings and student perspectives in our classroom. We hope you enjoy it! - Mr. Basham

Last week all the students were working very hard on their narrative writing piece, and received their results today. As a product of our time and determination, they got either a 1 (developing), 2 (nearly proficient), 3 (proficient), or 4 ( highly proficient). Congratulations, students!
This week we start non -fiction writing! During the end of the previous week, we tested our limits. Here’s a piece from citizen Kalonice Law, who displayed PYP Attitude ‘Risk-Taker’ by sharing part of her excellent narrative, ‘When I Broke My Collarbone’.
Two days ago, I walked outside, climbed on the hammock and sat down. I looked at the door, Aaron, my twin brother, was walking down the stairs of the deck.
Few minutes later, Aaron said, ”Kal, get off.” He was looking at the hammock like he was going to do something mischievous with it.
I reluctantly got off not knowing what he was doing. He held the side of the hammock and pushed the bottom, twisting it higher and higher. Until what I think he thought was “perfect”.
“Wow that looks fun!” I thought. “It looks more funner than the regular height.”
I got on first, then Aaron.
November 7th, 2017
Today at reading we had some reading groups met because of finished books the group had, the books names was Stargirl and Twerp.
We also did a normal choice book reading.
November 7th , 2017
Today at reading we were learned non fiction, the thing we were learning was “Ways Complex Nonfiction gets hard.” We also learned the word Implicit and explicit, implicit means hidden, and explicit means the opposite of hidden which is not hidden.
Today, at reading we did a normal reading time, and learned more about non fiction, we watched a video and tried to find out what was the main idea, which was implicit. One of the main ideas for the video was always be prepared for emergencies.
At reading we had Newberry club, which was during recess, Newbery club is when some new books get published and the people at newberry club try to predict what book will win the Newbery award.
We also were doing a reading response on a theory we had in our books. We do the reading response by checking with the checklist if we had all the parts.
Obob is coming up, the obob is where 4th grade and 5th grade compete in their own grade first, but after both of the grades compete with their own grade. Ob0b stands for Oregon battle of the books. There is one winner for each grade, then 4th grade and 5th grade would compete each other! After 4th grade or 5th grade won,, they would compete with other schools in Oregon!
After the school won, they would be champions of the Oregon battle of the books.
These two weeks we did a lot of different stuff, on the first day we walked around the school and observed 5 different places around the school, we went to the upper field, garden, lower track, lower parking lot and the lower bus loop. We had to find manmade and natural items.
On the second day we made 5 minute posters,we got split up in groups with about 6 people and made a poster about one of the areas we scouted.
A couple days later we had a speaker come in and talk to us about packaging and teach us that it is better to buy bigger boxes or bags to help our environment. After the long weekend another guest speaker came in, she talked to us about river rangers and what they do, she also talked about how to make it easier for them to clean our water.
These are some of the main things we did this week.
Math by Nikita
11/13/17 - Today we did a really cool project where we picked a card, and on the card the was a division problem, and we had to roll dice to make a array that we had to build with blocks! It was pretty exciting!
11/14/17 - Today we did almost the same thing as yesterday, we did that without dice and it was super awesome. We had to use, guess, our BRAINS!!!
Library and Technology
By: Katie 11/6/17
Today at Technology we got to choose our own seats. Friends sat next to each other like Macklin and Logan, Nora and Maddy and Evan, Ashley and Katie. It was actually surprisingly quiet! We started of by practicing typing on typing.com. Than we got to go to modules, which were modules 8 and 9.
At Library, we first went to the carpet and Miss. Mentesana started accusing us of what we are doing like checking out, reading, or free writing. Once we were done with that Mr. Basham came to pick us up and we went back to the classroom
Music and P.E.
By: Katie 11/16/17
In Music, we played instruments in groups of 4. One person would play a melody on a xylophone, one person would play bass on a bigger xylophone than the melody xylophone because the bigger ones are deeper and the smaller ones are higher and the bass usually sounds deeper. And two people would play the color, which adds pizazz to the melody. Then we played it in front of the class.
In P.E., we played a game where there were plastic bags (each person had one) and we each had 10 items in our bag. There were 4 taggers and each tagger got a yellow ball and wore a flashy yellow vest. The people with the bags tried to run across to the other side of the gym. If the tagger tagged you, you had to pick up an item, if you made it across then you get to drop of an item. This game represented fat in your body and how it was unhealthy to have too much fat and also unhealthy to have not enough fat.
