Writing 11-7-17
By: Lily and Lana
Last week all the students were working very hard on their narrative writing piece, and received their results today. As a product of our time and determination, they got either a 1 (developing), 2 (nearly proficient), 3 (proficient), or 4 ( highly proficient). Congratulations, students!
11-13-17
This week we start non -fiction writing! During the end of the previous week, we tested our limits. Here’s a piece from citizen Kalonice Law, who displayed PYP Attitude ‘Risk-Taker’ by sharing part of her excellent narrative, ‘When I Broke My Collarbone’.
Two days ago, I walked outside, climbed on the hammock and sat down. I looked at the door, Aaron, my twin brother, was walking down the stairs of the deck.
Few minutes later, Aaron said, ”Kal, get off.” He was looking at the hammock like he was going to do something mischievous with it.
I reluctantly got off not knowing what he was doing. He held the side of the hammock and pushed the bottom, twisting it higher and higher. Until what I think he thought was “perfect”.
“Wow that looks fun!” I thought. “It looks more funner than the regular height.”
I got on first, then Aaron.
Reading!
by Kalonice
November 7th, 2017
Today at reading we had some reading groups met because of finished books the group had, the books names was Stargirl and Twerp.
We also did a normal choice book reading.
November 7th , 2017
Today at reading we were learned non fiction, the thing we were learning was “Ways Complex Nonfiction gets hard.” We also learned the word Implicit and explicit, implicit means hidden, and explicit means the opposite of hidden which is not hidden.
November 8th
Today, at reading we did a normal reading time, and learned more about non fiction, we watched a video and tried to find out what was the main idea, which was implicit. One of the main ideas for the video was always be prepared for emergencies.
November 9th
At reading we had Newberry club, which was during recess, Newbery club is when some new books get published and the people at newberry club try to predict what book will win the Newbery award.
We also were doing a reading response on a theory we had in our books. We do the reading response by checking with the checklist if we had all the parts.
Obob is coming up, the obob is where 4th grade and 5th grade compete in their own grade first, but after both of the grades compete with their own grade. Ob0b stands for Oregon battle of the books. There is one winner for each grade, then 4th grade and 5th grade would compete each other! After 4th grade or 5th grade won,, they would compete with other schools in Oregon!
After the school won, they would be champions of the Oregon battle of the books.
Inquiry
By: Ashley
These two weeks we did a lot of different stuff, on the first day we walked around the school and observed 5 different places around the school, we went to the upper field, garden, lower track, lower parking lot and the lower bus loop. We had to find manmade and natural items.
On the second day we made 5 minute posters,we got split up in groups with about 6 people and made a poster about one of the areas we scouted.
A couple days later we had a speaker come in and talk to us about packaging and teach us that it is better to buy bigger boxes or bags to help our environment. After the long weekend another guest speaker came in, she talked to us about river rangers and what they do, she also talked about how to make it easier for them to clean our water.
These are some of the main things we did this week.
Math by Nikita
11/13/17 - Today we did a really cool project where we picked a card, and on the card the was a division problem, and we had to roll dice to make a array that we had to build with blocks! It was pretty exciting!
11/14/17 - Today we did almost the same thing as yesterday, we did that without dice and it was super awesome. We had to use, guess, our BRAINS!!!
Library and Technology
By: Katie 11/6/17
Today at Technology we got to choose our own seats. Friends sat next to each other like Macklin and Logan, Nora and Maddy and Evan, Ashley and Katie. It was actually surprisingly quiet! We started of by practicing typing on typing.com. Than we got to go to modules, which were modules 8 and 9.
At Library, we first went to the carpet and Miss. Mentesana started accusing us of what we are doing like checking out, reading, or free writing. Once we were done with that Mr. Basham came to pick us up and we went back to the classroom
Music and P.E.
By: Katie 11/16/17
In Music, we played instruments in groups of 4. One person would play a melody on a xylophone, one person would play bass on a bigger xylophone than the melody xylophone because the bigger ones are deeper and the smaller ones are higher and the bass usually sounds deeper. And two people would play the color, which adds pizazz to the melody. Then we played it in front of the class.
In P.E., we played a game where there were plastic bags (each person had one) and we each had 10 items in our bag. There were 4 taggers and each tagger got a yellow ball and wore a flashy yellow vest. The people with the bags tried to run across to the other side of the gym. If the tagger tagged you, you had to pick up an item, if you made it across then you get to drop of an item. This game represented fat in your body and how it was unhealthy to have too much fat and also unhealthy to have not enough fat.
