Due to time constraints, our press secretary was unable to meet this week's deadline. Here is what Mr. Taft's press secretary wrote:
Parents, this week in class has been a fun exciting and special week! We had a guest speaker from Kenya come in this week named Sabore. Sabore is a Maasai warrior. He talked to us about Maasai culture and life in Kenya. Sabore is on a very important mission to stop Kenyan girls from getting married at such an early age. The Kenyan girls are getting married at age 10-15 and they could be marrying 40-year-old men. He is also here to bring water closer to Kenya because his family has to walk 5-6 miles to get dirty contaminated water and we just have to walk a couple feet to get clean purified water. Ask your child about this amazing Maasai warrior to hear more. J
Math:
This week in math we have been working on using our knowledge of fractions to solve real world problems. To do this we used a problem-solving template to help us show all of our work with faction problem solving. On this template we have to repeat the question, list all of the important information, choose a couple strategies to help us solve, solve the problem and finally, reflect and evaluate. This Friday we had a quiz to demonstrate this learning.
Reading:
This week in reading we have continued to show our knowledge and growth through our read to self books by using all of the tools in our tool belts (strategies) to Determine Importance in our reading and give evidence for our thinking. Another thing we did this week in reading was practicing giving a pro reader response. A pro readers response is a list of sentences we could use to write a response about our thinking of the book with specific evidence. First, we state our position, then we give an example that supports our position, after that, you explain the significance of the example and repeat steps 3 and 4 as many times as needed, and finally, sum up the position with a final statement.
Writing:
This week in writing we focused on collaborating with our writing groups to grow as writers and worked on providing specific feedback to help our writing partners. To show this, we continued writing our narrative pieces and took home our writing partners writing and gave them a compliment and feedback. It was a great week in writing!
Science:
This week in science we went through the deign process again by figuring out how to keep an egg from cracking when dropped from a 20 foot height with materials to protect it’s fall. Today we are dropping the eggs of f the under cover play area! We hope the eggs don’t break!
